I flipped my calendar to August this week and the artwork shows a notebook and pen with these words: “My tongue is like the pen of a ready writer.”
This writer-girl loved reading that. It’s a line from Psalm 45:1:
My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.
And you know, that verse got me to thinking. I work hard writing stories to entertain and inspire readers while honoring God. But do I work as hard at what I say?
I want to. Because I believe words are powerful. And the best words I could possibly say, day in, day out, are ones of praise and thanks to the God who gave me a love of words in the first place.
Do you see your tongue like “the pen of a skillful writer?” What’s the most important thing you are going to say out loud today?

Wow, convicting words, Melissa. I’ve had a stressful morning so far, so I’ll be thinking of this throughout the day. 🙂
Have a great weekend!
Sorry your morning has been stressful. I hope the afternoon improves. 🙂 I will have a great weekend–hope you do, too! 🙂
Oh, thanks for the challenge today! Sometimes I try so hard to stop words from coming out of my mouth, today I’m going to be intentional TO speak…praise to God, love to my kids, sweetness to the Hubby…:)
That’s a good point, Susan. I think sometimes I do the same thing–focus so hard on what I shouldn’t say (complaining or whatever) that I forget the importance of speaking truth out loud!
Yikes! I tend to struggle with this, especially when I’m tired or hungry–or both!
I’m going to try not to complain at all at work today. I struggle with that too. 😉
Happy Friday, Mel!
Haha, yes, fatigue and hunger seriously mess with my ability to speak good things. 🙂 I hope you’re able to make it through work today not complaining. 🙂 Remember the mantra, my friend, remember the mantra. 🙂
Yes, Melissa, that was convicting! Isn’t it wonderful when verses become new to us all over again?
Yes, I love it when verses stand out like they’re brand new. It was cool, too, because I was just sitting down to write a blog–and had no idea what to write about–when I flipped the calendar over. And I smiled right away–it’s what I needed to read and it made a great blog topic. 🙂
Melissa,
I love this verse. Thank you for the reminder of who we are and what we’re called to be and the reason God gave us a tongue in the first place – to worship Him!
Thanks for stopping by, Becky!
Yep… my tongue… scattering dootles throughout the cosmos. Sometimes I think my ink well toppled over and black words spilled out all over the linen white world.
“Scattering dootles throughout the cosmos.” Love it, Reebs. But you are not someone I would ever think of as spilling black words… 🙂 You always encourage me!
I love that verse! It brings weird images to mind, though. Like someone licking the pages in their journal. I know…that’s just wrong, right? As a writer I see my mind as the pen, because more often than not I write words I think, not necessarily words I say. Even journaling privately, I don’t verbalize what I write – unless it’s worship. That’s a whole ‘notha level!!
Hahaha, I love the way your imagination works, Donna. 🙂
I got home at 5am today, after three days of travel and interruptions. And Cleveland. Oh, and Newark. Yeah baby. Newark.
I found my 9 year old in my bed. I woke him up and watched the joy on his face as he realized his Mommy was HOME. After a “Mom, you’re HOME!” I said 4 beautiful, tear inducing words.
“Yeah buddy, I’m home”.
Awww, sweet!
I’ll admit, my tongue isn’t always as skillful as my pen, er, keyboard – mainly because my mouth doesn’t have a backspace key on it! I try to sow encouragement and hope to others when I speak to them, but (like everyone) I sometimes fall short. Thanks for sharing this verse!
Oh how wonderful a backspace key for our words would be. 🙂
“I love the Lord!” out loud. Remember the song Whitney Houston sings in Preachers Wife? That comes to mind as I say again, “I love the Lord.”
I do remember that song. 🙂
