Classic Movie Gush: Christmas in Connecticut

CGM title header

You know what word is super hard to spell? Connecticut. Seriously. That darn misplaced “c.” Yay for being born in a state that’s spelled exactly how it sounds. I-O-W-A.

This week’s Christmas movie is almost as off the beaten path as my home state, but it’s a pretty fun one: Christmas in Connecticut. Though I’ve long loved classic movies, I didn’t see this one until just a few years ago. But I’m glad I finally did—because Barbara Stanwyck pretending to be married to Reginald Gardiner while falling for Dennis Morgan while faking basically her entire life…well, it makes for a fun setup.

In addition to some cool facts we dug up about this movie, this vlogisode (I just made that term up–which is somewhat of a theme this week, as you’ll see if you watch the video) includes:

  • A really dramatic sound effect!
  • A really dramatic revelation about how Christmas in Connecticut CHANGED MY LIFE
  • A really dramatic Clay bemoaning what movie we’re watching next (Actually he wasn’t that dramatic about it…I just really wanted to say “really dramatic” a third time.)

Have you seen Christmas in Connecticut? Want to take a guess at what movie we’re doing next?

    1. My family just watched Christmas in Connecticut last weekend — in between football games!
      “Catastroph!”

LOL — I had to use that word. I love when Uncle Felix fixates on that word. Well, I love everything about Uncle Felix. Everyone needs an Uncle Felix, don’t you think?

It’s definitely a fun premise…of course, I’m kind of biased since my book basically has the same premise. Haha!

White Christmas would’ve been a great guess about a week ago. 🙂

    2. Oh my goodness, I’d completely forgotten about this movie! Now you made me want to watch it this season! Yeah! Because one can never have too many Christmas movies to watch:)

I agree…there can never be too many Christmas movies. Although, somewhat sadly for me, I don’t really like most newer Christmas ones. Like the Hallmark/Lifetime ones…I just don’t care for them…so I tend to watch the classic ones over and over and over…

Well, Clay, you DO get the first picks of 2014.

Except, I realized that almost every time you ask me what my favorite scene is, I say the exact same thing: “Such-and-such is my favorite scene because I just love the dialogue in it.” When we do a silent film, I’m not going to be able to say that!

    3. As per usual, loved this episode, Melissa (and Clay!). So much fun. Unlike most people, I’m not a die-hard fan of It’s a Wonderful Life (though this may be because I watched it every single year as a kid or because its “concept” has been done dozens of times). This movie is really my very favorite “oldie” Christmas flick. Between this and White Christmas, those are the two classic Christmas films I *have* to watch each year.

…I’m one who saw the remake and while it was “okay,” though this is one (rare) case that I very much prefer the original. 😉

PS: Melissa, your novel was pure delight. Loved it and am eagerly awaiting book two from you. 🙂

Oh no, you’re not a die-hard “It’s a Wonderful Life” fan?! That’s one of my favorite movies ever…but that’s okay. It’s not everyone’s thing. At least you’ve seen it. I’m always floored when people tell me they haven’t.

Thanks so much for the kind words about the book. 🙂

    4. Christmas in Connecticut is my favorite Christmas film! I love it so much. It’s funny and sweet and full of awkward situations. Uncle Felix is my favorite…he’s hilarious and has the best lines. “Cook your own kidneys!” Though the rest of the cast is great, too. I have such a crush on Dennis Morgan’s character. =) {And it always drives me crazy when they refer to the baby as “it”, too!} I usually only watch Christmas films once each during the season, but I always end up watching CiC two or even three times. It’s just so good.

I hope The Shop Around the Corner will make the list eventually. It’s one of my favorites!

By the way, Melissa, one of the biggest reasons why I picked up your book was because when I read the synopsis, I thought that it sounded similar to Christmas in Connecticut (which, of course, is a good thing, considering how much I love the movie!).

I’m trying to guess which movie will be next, but I’m not sure. A famous Christmas movie, right? It seems like I remember both of ya’ll having seen It’s a Wonderful Life already, or I would guess that one. Maybe Miracle on 34th Street? That seems like one that Clay could possibly expect to make fun of…=)

I like that you watch CiC multiple times a year, Kristin. I have movies, too, that I have to watch over and over each year.

We do need to do Shop Around the Corner sometime. I don’t know why, but I always forget that it’s a Christmas movie.

And I like that you picked up on the CiC connection in my book’s synopsis.

    5. I saw it for the first time a few years ago and loved it. It’s one of my mom’s favorites. My favorite is probably Holiday Inn.

    6. Finally watched! Yay! I love, love, love this movie. One of my absolute favorites of all time. In fact, when we watched it this week, I quoted most of it right alone with the actors.

Since I didn’t get to comment on White Christmas, let me just say that I very much prefer Holiday Inn to White Christmas. I just think the story is stronger and the characters more likeable in Holiday Inn.
