Gushing about one of the fastest-talking movies ever: His Girl Friday

clapper blue header

If you asked me to name my favorite movie, there would be a moment in my brain when chaos would break loose. Like a bunch of teenage girls at a One Direction concert. (Is that still a relevant pop culture reference?) That chaos would look a little like this:

Oh my gosh, I LOVE What’s Up Doc? so much I can’t even handle it.
But The Philadelphia Story is one of the greatest things ever. In the whole world.
And then there’s The Sound of Music for nostalgic reasons.
Ack, why do people ask hard questions??

Instead of letting you see my panic, though, I’d probably very calmly and rationally ask you if I could name my top five instead of just one. And without a doubt, one of those top five would be the movie Clay Morgan and I are talking about this week.

His Girl Fridaystarring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, is one of the fastest-talking movies ever made and pretty much EVERY line is hilarious. Clay had never seen this movie before, so I’m relieved that great wrong has been righted. Things that happen in this episode of the Gush:

  • I rave about the awesomeness of director Howard Hawks. Like always.
  • Clay offers up one criticism of the film (and I handle it well, if I do say so myself).
  • I make a sweeping statement about people who haven’t seen His Girl Friday that isn’t very nice and I’m very kind of sorry. Thing is, I can’t entirely take it back. Because, seriously, you have to see this film. After you watch us gush…

Have you seen His Girl Friday? What movies make your “top 5” list?

    1. I absolutely Cary Grant movies. Arsenic and Lace would be my favorite, but Bringing Up Baby gives it alot of competition. Gone With The Wind and Wizard of Oz are also favorites. Thank you for sharing.

I love both Arsenic and Bringing Up Baby too. Gone with the Wind amazes me every time I watch it. I just looove it and I will never stop being awed at how a character as unlikable as Scarlett O’Hara manages to capture viewers’ hearts…it’s like, she’s so selfish and mean and yet, you still root for her!

It IS a treat. I like Sabrina too! Although, I’ll confess to being partial to the original…but that’s partially my classic movie bias showing. Both versions are totally enjoyable.

    2. Fabulous movie! Just fabulous! I first saw it at a revival theater in Los Angeles, one of those places with different old movies every night. I have it on DVD around here somewhere. I think I need to watch it tonight!

OHHH I’m so jealous! It’s like my dream to see old movies like His Girl Friday or The Philadelphia Story in theater. Different old movies every night? I should probably move to LA. 🙂

Haha, I will never be mean to you. 🙂 (Unless every once in awhile bringing up the “Is that a cornfield?” moment which is one of my favorite road trip moments ever…)

We COULD totally watch it while I’m down there!

    3. It’s been years since I’ve seen this one, so I just made a note to rewatch it soon, but its one I’ve always remembered. Of course I really can’t think of a Cary Grant movie I hate! Love that your gushes remind me of movies I haven’t seen in a long time. Of course I grew up back when you just had to wait for them to run on tv. I did get a few of the old ones when videos then dvds came out but sometimes you just forget to look for ones that aren’t always in front of you, so thanks for the reminders!

Haha, yes, I can’t think of a Cary Grant movie I hate either. I honestly can’t even think of one that I don’t like! And glad the gushes remind you of good movies to watch. Means we’re doing good in the world. 🙂

    4. I love this movie! It’s so hilarious and I love the rapid fire dialogue. Cary Grant is the best. =) It’s one of my favorite classic movies, but it doesn’t quite make my top five list…that would be: Singin’ in the Rain, Casablanca, It Happened One Night, Charade, and How to Steal a Million (in no particular order, except Singin’ in the Rain, which is my favorite classic film).

P.S. Sorry if this comment posts multiple times. I’m having trouble with it going through!

No worries, Kristin–my site was having some issues earlier–server maintenance or something. You mentioned five AWESOME movies. I love that you mentioned How to Steal a Million. I just saw that for the first time a few years ago and couldn’t fathom how I hadn’t seen it earlier. Peter O’Toole is just too fun in it.

    5. I have to list 6 because I can’t narrow it down any further 🙂 they are: Letters To Juliet, the Harry Potter series, Sabrina (Harrison Ford version), Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, and Facing the Giants. As far as classic movies my favorites are Charade and An Affair to Remember and Mary Poppins. There are so many incredible movies out there it’s so hard to pick just a few!!!

Charade is super fun and An Affair to Remember just never gets old, does it? Although, I have the exact same experience every time I watch Affair–I’m always like, “Don’t do it, Deborah Kerr! Don’t walk out in front of the car!!” 🙂
