Classic Movie Gush: The Sound of Music (aka the episode where Clay is wrong)

CGM title header

Sooo…The Sound of Music, right? Apparently Carrie Underwood is trying her hand at the Maria von Trapp thing on TV and I have to admit, I’m a little hesitant about this. For one thing, I’m not a country music fan…ergo, I’m not really a Carrie Underwood fan. But thing is, it wouldn’t matter if it was my favorite singer in the world playing Maria for this upcoming TV remake. I’d still have reservations simply because of how much I like the original film.

(Although, my favorite singers are Chris Martin and Bear Rinehart, of Coldplay and Needtobreathe respectively…and the thought of either one of them singing “Do-Re-Mi” is just funny enough that I might possibly be willing to tune in.)

But yeah…Clay Morgan and I figured with the upcoming Sound of Music TV special, now would be a good time to cover the 1965 film. BUT *gasp* things turned a wee bit contentious this time around. I don’t think we’re going to go the route of Lewis/Martin anytime soon, but it is possible I’m still having trouble getting over the fact that he doesn’t fully acknowledge the awesomeness of The Sound of Music.

In addition to intense debate, some of the treats you’re in for in this episode include:

  • My brilliant analogy comparing The Sound of Music to the Super Bowl (it totally works!)
  • A startling revelation from Clay that may have forever altered my opinion of a certain movie reviewer
  • That time I got in trouble at church

Okay so who’s right? Clay or yours truly? (Helpful hint: The answer you’re looking for is Melissa.)

    1. I’ve (briefly) been in the church in Austria where the wedding was filmed. Maria & one of her dtrs. appear as pedestrians crossing the street near the very end of the movie. Their family lodge in Stowe, VT is still awesome & filled w/ a sense of their family. Come on, Clay, this is based on inspiring history! Melissa wins.

You’ve been to the lodge in Vermont, Dee? I don’t know why I was so fascinated by the von Trapp family bio as a kid, but I was and it always made me want to go to their lodge in Vermont. So, on this Clay and I agree–point to you.

    2. Okay, I didn’t want to have to pull out another SUPER FACT to break the tie. BUT, I have to say that THE REAL MARIA VON TRAPP didn’t even like this movie. So that’s just something that has to be dealt with 😀

But Clay, who has EVER liked a movie that was made about them?? Also, apparently the real Maria was prone to moodiness and she admitted she didn’t even love Captain von Trapp when she married him. So can we really even trust her?

Agreed, Cynthia. You know, I’ve never actually seen SOM performed live, but it’s hard for me to imagine…part of what I love about the movie is the landscape and scenery and all that.

    3. Melissa is totally right!! I’ve probably seen it as many times as she has. But I’m also very interested in seeing Carrie Underwood have a go at it.

    4. Melissa, I want to agree with you so badly, just because you love The Sound of Music so much…but I have to go with Clay on this one. This is a weird movie situation for me where I really do like all of the pieces of The Sound of Music. Even hearing you talk about it, I get excited about the different scenes and songs. I love the story, all of the songs except one, the romance, and the adventure at the end. And I always wanted to love the movie itself, but I just can’t make myself. I think maybe because it’s really slow and long; I always tire of watching it before I can get through the whole thing.

Haha, that’s okay, Michelle. For Clay’s sake, I’m glad someone agreed with him. That way he doesn’t have to be wrong all by himself. 🙂

Just kidding…glad you like different aspects of the movie even if the film as a whole isn’t your thing.

    5. LOL. Well, seeing as I’m a SOM fan, you are the winner, hands down:) And I’m still pouting that this past spring when I had the awesome chance of being in Europe with a day spent on the SOM tour, Hubby decided we should take the other tour instead…yes, yes, I still love him:)

Oh my goodness…I would still be pouting too! I know that technically there’s that Bible verse about love not keeping record of wrongs or whatever, but maybe in just this one case it’d be okay to remind your husband of how he made you miss the SOM tour next time you need a favor…

    6. The Sound of Music is epic. And my daughter and I got to go to Salzburg and see some of the sites where they filmed it, and saw the actual gazebo/pavilion. I took a picture of her standing in front of it (it was locked because people keep leaping across the benches and hurting themselves LOL) and it was a few weeks before her birthday and she was Sixteen Going on Seventeen! It was Amazing!!!

      1. And I’ll probably the live one with Carrie Underwood out of curiosity but I don’t know why they have to remake a classic. Put a different spin on it and call it something else! No one can touch Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer!!

    7. Wait a minute. What do you mean the REAL Maria von Trapp didn’t even love the Captain when she married him? How utterly, totally depressing! This is why fiction is often better than real life. Who wants to mess with happily ever after?

And yeah, I’ve also got to agree that no one is probably going to like a movie made from their own life.

Didn’t even love him. She admitted it in her autobiography. BUT I guess I should’ve finished the story because she DID go on to say that she learned to love him throughout their marriage. So, you know, that’s happy. 🙂

    8. I think that I can honestly say The Sound of Music was the first classic movie I ever watched. I didn’t get into old movies until I was about 15, but I used to watch this one every single time it came on TV. But here’s the thing: it always stayed on way past my bedtime, so I only ever saw the first half or so. I didn’t see it all the way through until I was a teenager. I had no idea that Maria and the Captain fell in love, I missed the majority of the Nazi plot, etc. I couldn’t believe there was so much more to the movie that I had missed all those years! =)

I do enjoy The Sound of Music. I love the songs and Julie Andrews is great. The thing is, I don’t watch it that often. I don’t get excited about watching it again and again (though, like I said, I always enjoy it when I do). Maybe because it’s so long and a bit slow. So I do feel a bit guilty for not loving it as much as I think I should. =) Several years ago, I probably would have considered it one of my favorite musicals, but since then I’ve seen some a lot of musicals that I love more, so it has moved down the list a bit. Watching this review has made me want to rewatch the film, though!

P.S. This is random (or maybe not, since Mary Poppins was mentioned), but ya’ll should review some of the cheesy live action Disney movies from the 60s. They’re definitely not true classics like the ones you normally choose, but they’re awesome in their own way and I’d like to hear what ya’ll think. =) My favorites are The Love Bug, That Darn Cat, and Never a Dull Moment.

Oh fun that it’s the first classic movie you ever saw. It’s probably one of the first ones I ever saw too. We actually had it taped off TV on VHS and I’ll never forget the first time I actually saw the full version and realized all the parts I’d missed due to commercials. Funny that you only ever saw the first half for many years!!

You’re right…it is quite long. So no need to feel guilty. But I’m glad the vlog made you want to rewatch it!

Ahh the 60s Disney movies. I grew up watching all of them. I think my favorite was The Parent Trap, but I liked all the ones you mentioned too.

    9. You are SO right, Melissa. 😉

Loved this video. And ‘The Sound of Music,’ it’s a special classic no matter what that mr-what’s-his-name critic says. 😉 As for the TV live production, I am excited about it. From all the BTS stuff, Carrie sounds and looks awesome; everyone was so worried she’d still have her country twang and actually she sounds awesome as Maria. Either way, I hope it’s entertaining and if nothing else, I expect it will be.

Don’t hate me, but… (CONFESSION), I actually like ‘Mamma Mia!’; the story is of course, immoral and I wouldn’t recommend it to any of the young people I know. Still.. it’s silly but cute and the stars make it fun. 🙂

Yay, glad you enjoyed the video and that you’re on my side. Take that, Roger Ebert!

I’m still a little hesitant about the Carrie Underwood version, but depending on how my Thursday night goes, I might give it a bit of a chance. We shall see. You’re right…even if it doesn’t live up to the original (which, let’s face it, how could it?) it could still be entertaining.

And I don’t hate you for liking Mamma Mia! But only because you’re on my side in the Sound of Music debate. Haha! 🙂

        1. Always on your side in these classic movie gushes. 😉

…hope you enjoyed “Sound of Music, Live!” if you saw it, Melissa. Of course, Carrie struggles in the acting (though she did reasonably well, and honestly, I’d have been surprised if she blew us away there) but she killed the vocals and even if the acting seemed a bit “stilted” all-around, I feel like more stage productions do suffer there just because they don’t have the benefit of do-overs as film does. Plus the “scene” is very different. 🙂

    10. YES. People named Melissa are ALWAYS right.

      Just sayin.

The Sound of Music was one of my mom’s favorite movies when I was growing up. Once when I was a kid (and had no money) I wrote out the lyrics to “My Favorite Things” on notebook paper and gave it to her for Christmas.

      True story.

YES people named Melissa are always right!! Especially if their last name begins with a “T.” 🙂

And seriously, that’s the cutest gift story ever. I love it. And of course, I can’t help sharing that once when I was little and my mom was coming home after a day away or something, I made a picture and wrote “Home Sweat Home” at the top. Yes. Sweat.
