The Truth About Conferences…and you!

Yes, it’s Devo Day, but along with some encouragement, today I’m also offering a sales pitch of sorts. 🙂

American Christian Fiction Writers AssociationOkay, so lot’s of us are headed for the big ACFW Conference in a few weeks in Dallas. Show of hands…who’s going?

Maybe you’re not going to this particular conference, but if you’re a writer and if you’ve been to any kind of writing conference, you know it can sometimes come part and parcel with a serious case of nerves. Like Melissa-without-her-morning-coffee jitters.

But conferences don’t have to be daunting.

Which is why the My Book Therapy team has put together its latest resource for writers–The Truth About Conferences: The My Book Therapy guide to how to have a successful conference.

It’s a fabulous resource for any writer looking to expand his or her horizon at a conference…and get the most of out it! Some of the topics covered include:

  • How to choose a conference
  • Budgeting for a conference
  • How to prepare professionally with business cards and pitch sheets
  • Choosing the right workshops
  • How to handle appointments
  • Organizing your time and information
  • Standing out in a positive way
  • Conference Etiquette
  • How to pack for success
  • And even how to network to after the conference is over!
  • It’s available in multiple digital formats…for only $3.99. That’s cheaper than what you’ll spend at Starbucks during the conference, my friend. 🙂

I contributed to this resource with a section on standing out in a positive way. It’s a fun, but also important topic to talk about…because, after all, one of the main reasons we attend conferences is to catch the attention of agents and editors, yeah? And that can be tough to do when we’re sharing the spotlight with hundreds of other writers.

It’s also a slightly funky topic to talk about as a Christian because, dude, we’re not supposed to be all “me, me, me” all the time, right? There is that whole humility thing to consider. But I think it’s totally possible to stand out in a professional, fun and yes, still Christ-like way.

And…I don’t think we should be afraid to stand out. You know why? Because God has called us to be outstanding.

Just this week, I came across this verse in 1 Thessalonians: It is clear to us, friends, that God not only loves you very much but also has put his hand on you for something special.

I love that. God has put his hand on me…and on you…for something special. That’s the Truth About You.

So believe it! Go to ACFW or whatever conference might be in your future with the practical help and advice of the My Book Therapy team…

And fully armed with the truth that you are outstanding!

Do you ever worry about standing out? How does it feel to know God has put his hand on you for something special?

      1. Speaking of outstanding…MBT books always are.
        Looking forward to reading it.

Melissa, being from this part of the country, we know there’s nothing wrong with being, “out standing in our fields”, don’t we? (sorry-couldn’t resist)

      2. Too funny!

I love the scripture from 1 Thessalonians. I agree, we are created to stand out. Some of us stand out a little more than the others, because we’re each called to a different purpose. Clearly the MBT Staff has been called to stand out in front! I love MBT Resources and I can’t wait to meet everyone!!! I was bummed to miss the Truth About Conferences webinar last night. 🙁
