I know, I know, I’m asking you to make a c-r-a-z-y decision on a Monday morning. And I’ll be honest, I’m asking solely for my own purposes. I’ve referenced both these TV shows and their leading men in my current book and I’m wondering, are people even going to know what I’m talking about?
The TV shows: Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie.
The men: Darrin Stephens or Anthony Nelson?
Dick York as the first Darrin. He later left the show due to back problems and was replaced by Dick Sargent. |
Larry Hagman as Tony Nelson. He’s an astronaut. Automatic cool points |
I’m firmly in the Tony Nelson camp, myself. First of all, the show creators were way more creative with Tony’s character. He works for NASA. Can you get cooler than that? Darrin…he’s an ad exec. Nothing wrong with that, but nothing all that exciting either.
Next, their sidekicks. Darrin’s boss Larry is his main sidekick. But Tony has friend and fellow astronaut Roger Healey who’s a load of ridiculous fun.
But most all, Darrin drives me crazy because he always expects wife/witch Samantha to quell her magic. He wants her to be…normal.
Tony, on the other hand, while often a bundle of nerves because of the trouble Jeannie aka genie gets him into, isn’t above asking her to do the blinking thing. I like that he likes that she’s a genie, even gets a kick out of her antics.
Like I said, important question. So which leading man–or TV show–gets your vote? And if you’re not up on your classic TV, um, you may need to rethink your priorities. 🙂

Adios.
How do you come up with these questions?
You are funny and brilliant and so, so cute!
And I’m going with Tony. DIdn’t even have to think about it.
I liked his laugh too.
Haha, thanks, Beth. Tony does have a great laugh…especially when he’s nervous about what Jeannie’s getting him into. Love it!
I’m in the Tony camp too. Never did understand why Darren had such a thing about Samantha’s “talent”.
I know! Darrin was such a wet blanket most of the time.
Oh Anthony! Love him!
Hehe, I’m glad I’m not alone.
Poor Darrin … not getting any votes yet. 🙁
well first darrin—yes! second darrin— didn’t like as much. it sucks that they did darrin cast switch
LOL, Beth. I sorta wondered if it would be a landslide in Tony’s favor.
Yeah, Rachel, the cast switch always stinks for a character–the second one generally doesn’t have a chance at audience appreciation. Haha!
Re-watching them again. Darrin sucks, both versions. The character was mean, entitled, chauvinistic and treated his family like they were his property. I don’t blame anyone for not picking him.
I was in Canada during those years so unaware, but I’ll go w/ Gibbs on NCIS or Robert Redford in his classic movies, maybe especially, Horse Whisperer.
I’ve never seen Horse Whisperer. I’ll have to check it out!
anthony ….. anthony…… so anthony…..
Hehehe, lots of people with good taste on the blog today. Ha! Also, I’m getting really excited for your Dr. MacNeill post. 🙂
Tony. No contest. Darrin was way too whiny. Besides, “nothing beats an astronaut.”
Yes, Darrin was whiny! He annoys me. 🙂
So, I haven’t watched these shows since they were on Nick at Night (and I’m kind of depressed that now all the shows I watched as a kid are on Nick at Night…what does this mean?!)…but I LOVED I Dream of Jeannie. So that–combined with the fact that Tony is far more handsome–means Tony gets my vote. 😉
Hey, when you’re hanging out at my place later this year, we can catch you up on your Bewitched and Jeannie viewing if you want. And yes, Tony definitely wins in the handsome department.
And Tony is sooo good looking!
LOL. And yes. 🙂
Anthony all the way! I loved that show! They had such great chemistry together. 🙂
Definitely good chemistry!
I used to love to watch I dream of Jeannie! Nick at Night all the way. Way off topic, but I got my daughter hooked on the Brady Bunch, I remember every detail of every episode.
Oh the Brady Bunch. I used to watch that after school. 🙂
And I specifically remember asking my dad if he wore bell bottoms like the Brady Bunch boys in the 70s!
Definitely Tony Nelson! I Dream of Jeannie was always one of my favorite shows. I used to wish I had a room like Jeannie’s bottle–round and filled with pillows! And I loved Roger, too. Just a great cast all around.
Yeah, her bottle room is great. So bright, too. In general, I think round rooms are cool. Hehe…which makes me think I should’ve run for president solely so I could hang out in the oval office.
Major Nelson! I know I watched Bewitched when I was a kid, but I LOVED Jeannie!
What is amazing to me is that two shows that were basically like the same show existed at the same time. Except, I don’t know why it’s amazing…half of tv today is similarly-written crime shows or different versions of the same reality show! 🙂
I grew up with these sitcoms. I always loved Tony Nelson…sooo dreamy, but hated when he turned into J.R.
I’ve never watched Dallas. Was he a bad guy in that? I’m thinking maybe he was…
I didn’t watch Bewitched that often, but loved I Dream of Jeannie. So I’m definitely a Tony Nelson fan. And Larry Hagman looked so handsome when he was younger! He made a great villain on Dallas.
Now I think I need to watch Dallas. He was so sweet as Tony. It’s hard to see him as a villain. 🙂
Oooh, you’re taking me on a trek back in time. What fun! I loved I Dream of Jeannie, so Tony Nelson gets my vote.
So far, it’s a total landslide!
Hmmm…I can’t say I’ve watched a lot of either show, but Jeannie definitely gave me more laughs. And yeah, I’d know what you were referencing!
Oh good, I really was curious if people would catch the references. Sometimes I think all my pop culture references are half a century too old. 🙂
I have seen tons of both of these shows (plus so many other old ones-Hogan’s Heroes, I Love Lucy, Laverne&Shirley, F Troop, Happy Days, Andy Griffith, Beverly Hillbillies, Gilligan’s Island, and Green Acres) and while I enjoyed Bewitched more I’d probably pick Tony too!
Don’t you just love old TV? It’s so…happy. 🙂
haha yeah!
Tony, all the way! No question. No comment. Tony. 🙂
Haha, I’m glad so many people agree on this. Unity. I love it. 🙂
Two of my faves! I guess Anthony. How can you pass up his humor and soft side and that chin. Seriously, a perfect chin. lol
Hehe, yes, it’s a good chin. I’d have to agree.
Oh my gosh MTagg! Talk about a blast from the past. I don’t even remember the first guy. Larry Hagman – that’s who I’d pick. I’m more a Facts of Life and Different Strokes kinda girl!
The Facts of Life! I loved Jo on that show…AND George Clooney before he was cool. 🙂
Definitely…Tony. Darrin was way to stuffy. The show could have been more fun if he’d let loose every now and then!
Haha, yes, stuffy is a good word for Darrin!
Major Anthony “Tony” Nelson of course!
Major Anthony “Tony” Nelson of course!
Oh, this is a fun post! 🙂
Ha, Major Nelson, of course! Or as I like to call him, “Major Hot”! 😉
Have a nice weekend!
I vote for Major Nelson.
I vote for Major Nelson.
I love Tony over Darrin easily. BUT, Tony was not as loyal as Darrin; the only thing I see wrong in him.
