I know, I know. It’s going to be so hard when the election is over this week. I mean, like seriously.
What commercials are we going to watch on TV?
So, to ease your pain and mine, I’ve compiled a list of…
Post-Election Survival Tips:
How To Keep That Wonderful Election Time Feeling All. Year. Long.
1) Set your DVR to record commercials now. You can watch and re-watch them to your heart’s content in the coming harsh weeks and months of no election coverage.
2) Rather than starting your re-tweets with the customary RT, instead go with “My name is __________ and I approve this message.” Warning: This is really gonna cut into your 140 characters, but it’s worth it to retain that warm and cuddly election feeling.
3) Remove your phone number from any “Do Not Call” lists. Maybe you’ll get lucky and start receiving early survey calls for 2016.
4) Speaking of, start talking about the 2016 elections now. That won’t annoy anybody.
5) Make a scrapbook of all the political fliers and postcards you’ve received. Because of course you’ve saved them right? You can look back at your scrapbook for years to come. (However, I will not be doing this. Not because it’s a crazy idea or anything. But because I don’t like to scrapbook.)
6) Hang out with zealous Ron Paul supporters and talk about how he was cheated.
7) Find reasons to talk about unemployment, Obamacare and Bain. Nobody is tired of those topics. Nobody.
8) Keep C-Span on all day long. It’s not quite the same as the excitement of election season, but you’ll see just as many suits and flag pins.
9) Subscribe to every PAC newsletter list known to man.
10) Watch and re-watch the debates on YouTube. Because watching the moderators do such a wonderful job never gets old.
How are you going to survive the end of election season?
*Okay, for the record and just so nobody out there thinks I’m disillusioned beyond all hope, I do think this election is important. I’ve already voted. And I care. But I just can’t bring myself to be sad about the break from political commercials, junk mail and yard signs. Except for this one, ———>
which, as I noted a few weeks ago, is my favorite…

I enjoy your humor, Melissa!
Thanks, Teri. I enjoy seeing your name here. 🙂
Ha! Last night my daughter –after 5 political commercials in a row — sarcastically noted your #1 up there because she just KNEW we were all going to miss those adds so much we wouldn’t know what to do with normal commercials. She’s 10. Even she’s sick of it. Think I’ll show her this list;)
From the mouths of babes… 🙂 (Although, probably a 10-year-old wouldn’t like to be called a babe…)
You are hilarious! How long has this election been, anyway? 10 years? Oh, just 4? Seemed like 10 to me.
Yeah, feels long to me, too…and then I think of all the money spent and want to cry…or throw up…
And yet, there’s a heck of a lot to be grateful for here in the U.S., too, so you take the good, you take the bad…and now I’m singing the Facts of Life theme song…
Oh, what would I do without you, Melissa?
Laugh a lot less, that’s for sure!
Hehe, laughter is a good, good thing. 🙂
Bravo! Just the tongue-in-cheek post I needed to start the week off right. It will help me keep today and tomorrow in perspective.
Glad it’s what you needed, Edie. 🙂
Hahahahaaaaaa! 🙂
Hahaha….
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! I LOVE THIS!!!!!
Thanks, Krista…and thanks for the tweet, too. The one downside of the election being over tomorrow is that I’ll have lost a valuable blog subject. This election has provided sooo many opportunities for posts… 🙂
🙂 Hilarious. I’m so ready for it to be over!
I don’t think you’re alone, Julie…
You made my day, Melissa!
Oh good. 🙂
Love this, Melissa! It is one of my favorite blog posts of the year.
Thanks, Michelle…excited to have you as a guest on Wednesday!
So darn funny! Thanks for making me almost spit out my Junior Mints!
Junior Mints. I love those!
Oh my goodness, that was a welcome respite from all the vitriol I’m seeing everywhere! I DO have some DVR catching up to do, so maybe I’ll save it for another couple of weeks so I can watch those ads with some 20/20 hindsight.
Haha, yes, watching the ads later could be entertaining… 🙂
ROFLOL!!
One thing I’m soooo grateful about not having TV anymore: no. more. election. commercial. bashing.
Ah…. 😉
No more TV? Is this a recent change? 🙂 Yeah, I don’t blame you for not missing the election commercials… 🙂
You’re right, WON’T miss election ads, (shudder to think of $ spent), but care enough that I’m an election judge today from 2 pm until ??? Has made me decide I will NEVER include a character in a book whose running for office, except–Oh, my goodness, I think I am planning that in terms of saving one town–but NO commercials!
Hope you enjoy the election judging thing. In the midst of all the election craziness and yes, political fatigue on my part at least, election day always makes me grateful for the fact that we can vote here without riots and violence. Thankful for people like you who help polling places run smoothly. 🙂
Well said. I am so tired of the bashing. Didn’t mind the bloated promises, but the bashing really got wearisome. I think the air time will be delightfully quiet…for a season…time for Christmas music. 🙂
Christmas music makes everything better. 😉
Hilarious! 🙂
Raj, thanks for stopping by! So fun to meet and chat with you at the MacLit thing!
You could succeed at stand-up comedy if you ever want a break from writing great books.
I don’t know, I tend to trip anytime I’m on stage, so… 🙂 But thanks, Dee!
