So this weekend I hung out in Chicago…such good times. And on the way home, I’m blaring the tunes to keep myself awake when “Hey Ya” by OutKast comes on. And I do the exact same thing I do every time this song comes on…
Cringe at the fact that I own the song.
And that I like it so much.
And turn up the volume.
It’s one of those songs I’d feel a little sheepish about if someone got ahold of my iPhone and checked out my iTunes song list. Which led me to come up with the top five most embarrassing songs on my iTunes:
1) We Are Never Getting Back Together…Taylor Swift.
Truth is, I own her entire Red album. Truth is, I really like it. Truth is, I was as surprised as anyone.
2) Candle in the Wind (Goodbye, England’s Rose)…Elton John
And yes, it still sorta makes me cry.
3) Where Ya At?…Shaquille O’Neal
No, that’s not a typo. I’m totally serious about Shaq. Sometimes we forget in addition to starring in quality movies like Kazaam, the basketball player was also a musician.
4) U Smile…Justin Bieber
I generally try to console myself with this one because it’s the only Bieber song I know or own.
5) The Call…Backstreet Boys.
I mean, it’s bad enough that it’s Backstreet Boys, right? But then you remember the entire song is about a guy calling his girlfriend and lying to her and you realize something has gone incredibly wrong in your head ’cause man, it’s still just so catchy!
Okay, confession time: What’s the most embarrassing song you love?

I think children of the 80’s & 90’s should be exempt from this question. 😉 My husband and I were listening to a 90’s Pop station on Pandora this weekend, just for laughs. It’s amazing what a bad period of music that was. And the worst part was, not only did I know every song–I knew all the words!
If I had to pick a current song, I’d join you on the bandwagon for Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Getting Back Together.” Especially when I picture the video and I get the urge to jump up from my desk chair, fling my hands in the air, & sing we..EEEE…”
LOL I’m right there with you on the Taylor Swift song. The first time I heard it I was like, “Noooo, I like this! It’s just not right, but I like it!”
Sigh….do I have to????
GANGHAM STYLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There…I said it. And the sadder thing is that I can do the dance too! lol
Okay, I NEED to see you do perform the dance. Vlog?? 🙂
no no no you have no S Club 7. a guy was hitting on me at the gym last week and he asked what was on my ipod and i went….” ummmm….. S Club 7″
Oh my, I don’t even know any S Club 7 songs. I really don’t. Is this a bad thing? Do I need to sample their songs?
Does it have to be an adult song? Cuz mine is “Rise -n- Shine” by Raffi! *blush* Plus, I love 60’s music!
Raffi! I remember that from when I was a kid!!
Hot Buttered Popcorn … but, honestly, it’s on there because my daughter needed it for music class.
It is kind of catchy/fun, though.

That is too fun, Beth. 🙂
I wasn’t raised in a family that listened to music, so I can plead ignorance when I say this. The first CD I ever bought was when I was about sixteen and it was the BeeGees! Ha.
HA HA HA!! Hilarious, Gabe. 🙂
My 16-yr.-old granddtr. set me up on Playlist & then this weekend upgraded me to Itunes. Probably the most surprising song I play and play again lots is the wailing tragecy of You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive by Daryl Scott that I first heard through rdg. a post Beth Vogt wrote for a blogger in Harlan, Ky.
I don’t know that song, Dee. I’d better check it out…
I can’t resist YMCA!! Hahahaha!! And I dance like a fool with all the moves, too. 🙂
I love YMCA!!
As do we all. As do we all.
I happen to like Taylor Swift’s “Why yah gotta be so…mean?” LOL I’m cracking up at your songs! Oh and I still have Mambo #5 on my playlist, not to be confused with Maroon 5.
I was not confused, Jessica. Not at all. 🙂
LOL Mambo #5!! Oh my goodness, I am back in high school all of a sudden…
When I read Backstreet Boys, I immediately thought, “Everybody…yeah…rock your body…yeah…”
It’s in your head now, isn’t it?! Hehe.
And yeah, I like the Beebs’ “Baby.” *hangs head*
Thanks, Lindsay. I just walked down the hall, bobbing my head, singing “Baby, Baby, Baby, Ohhh…” ;)~ It’s officially stuck in my head now!
Glad to be of help, Crystal. 😉
I actually don’t know “Baby” but “Rock Your Body” by Backstreet Boys…umm…yes…[hangs head in shame]…
Okay, you might want to take a deep breath for this one. Whoo.
I own the entire album featuring “Hey Ya.” Yes.
Embarrassing songs?
Cha-Cha-Slide
I’m Sexy and I Know It (LMFAO)
Beer Barrel Polka
Bust a Move (Young MC)
Little Susie (Tesla)
This Woman’s Work (Maxwell)
Right Round (FloRida)
Brokenhearted (Karmin)
The Arms of Orion (Prince)
and…
wait for it…
The Chicken Dance.
Yeah.
Okay for real YOU WIN, Jill…seriously…funniest list ever!!!
I love the old disco era song called Groove Line by Heatwave. I think it came out in like 1978. I was quite a young girl back then. It’s my “Happy Song”. I just start dancing when I hear it. Hubby plays it for me when I’m down. “Leave your worries behind…”
Oh, sweet of your husband to play it for you. 🙂
I have that “Candle in the Wind” on a CD single – but I don’t think it ever made it to my iPod!
I guess my “guilty pleasure” would be “Golddigger” by Kanye. Yes, I have that song. I can’t even remember why! But it’s on my list of “stuff to only listen to when I’m in the car alone!”
Yeah I bought the single back in high school… 🙂
Golddigger?! That’s too funny!
Hahaaaa!!! Too funny. I have some by Miley Cyrus…LOL
Oh Miley… 🙂
Love this! Oh I’m all over the place with music, Broadway, Jazz, Hip-hop, Country, I listen to it all…but it’s my work-out list that typically has stuff I shouldn’t repeat. But the beat is so good! I just make up my own lyrics, is that bad?;)
I love workout lists. 🙂 I love Coldplay so much it’s not even funny, but they rarely make it onto a workout playlist…that actually tends to be where my more random selections come in. 🙂
Love this, Melissa!
Oh, my, yes! Do I ever have songs on my iPod that are more “fluff” than substance. Love that Taylor Swift song for all it’s annoying silliness – and her latest album is quite good. Probably her best yet. Vocally she isn’t the most talented but gosh, does she know how to write!
Also, I do have some of the ‘Chipmunk’ songs like their rendition of ‘Firework’ (they just make me laugh and though I don’t listen to them often, some days that is the only music that will put a smile on my face). Then there is Carly Rae Jepsen or Demi Lovato. 😉
Happy Monday!
I was pretty obsessed with the Chipmunks as a kid and my parents have home videos of my sister and I dancing to the theme song!
Lol! I love this! I have Taylor Swift, too, and One Direction – eek! I also have Vanilla Ice. Ice, Ice, Baby…
Vanilla Ice! And now I want to go to a high school dance!
Sidenote: My CEO’s daughter went to London and year or two ago and met Harry Stiles without realizing he was Harry Stiles. It was before One Direction was at all well-known in the U.S. She actually danced with him at a pub and at the end of the night, he told her who he was. True story!
Oh my gosh! My daughter would be so jealous! 🙂
Yeah, it’s so random! She has a picture of herself with him and everything…but had no idea that’s who he was when they were hanging out. 🙂
My middle daughter has decided that all of a sudden she has Bieber fever. It cracks me up! 😀
I always seem to dance to the song “Under Pressure.” Don’t know what it is but it gets me moving.
Too funny. I love little girls who swoon over musicians. 🙂
Probably because I was one. 🙂
“And We Danced” The Hooters (really? what a name)
“Knew You Were Waiting” Aretha and George Michael( if I have to ‘splain ‘Aretha?)
“Part of Me” Katy Perry
Katy Perry?! 🙂
U Can’t Touch This – MC Hammer
Gonna Make You Sweat – C+C Music Factory
Play That Funky Music – Wild Cherry
They all make me dance involuntarily. 🙂
Oh MC Hammer…you and your trend-inspiring pants…
Loved reading everyone’s lists!!
My list would be. WAY. Too. Long.
But I’ll give you one: “It Takes Two….” by Rob Base. Makes me wanna bust out and dance in public. That and “Shakira, Shakira” but. Yeah. Should contain those moments within my four walls. At home! To save my family from serious embarrassment!
Fun Blog, Melissa! 🙂
Thanks, Raj. Fun song picks! Actually, all these comments have given me more ideas for songs I need to add to my playlists… 🙂
Probably all the “Potty Time” video songs from potty training days. It’s not that I really “love” the songs, it’s more like I love that they usually make people smile.
A song I don’t love but am appalled that I know the some of the words to is “Torn between two lovers”. Yuck.
So thankful for all the wonderful songs that honor Jesus. Love it when those are the ones that rise up with in me. No embarrassment there!!
Oh the potty-training songs. I’m kind of sad that I can sing the lyrics to most of them, too. LOL!!
